Stepping Distance Survey
Client: South Central Trains, Feb - Mar 2004

Research by the Consultancy for Crossrail in 1996 had quantified the link between the time taken by passengers to board and alight from trains, and the stepping distance between the train and the platforms. In addition, South Central were required to provide information to the SRA about stepping distances, to fulfil obligations relating to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. With these two issues in mind, the Consultancy designed a survey programme to measure stepping distances at all publicly-used platforms at South Central-operated stations.
Around 350 platforms were surveyed by Consultancy staff, using specialist gauges designed by Senior Analyst Matthew Smith. Horizontal and vertical readings were taken from on-board train (3 readings per platform), without affecting station dwell times. The results were entered into a spreadsheet, and a report was produced identifying platforms with excessive stepping distances.
