Station Information Zoning

The Railway Consultancy is working with Southern Railway in an industry-leading project to transform the way in which people find their way around stations. Every station on the Southern network is undergoing a major passenger information change. Called Information Zones, the new areas will rationalise the way in which information on stations is presented to passengers into logical zones, so the same information is in the same place whichever station you happen to be at.
Stations are being divided into four areas:
- Welcome Zone - containing station facility and where appropriate, community information
- Ticket Zone - containing ticket purchasing and real time passenger service information
- Train Zone - containing penalty fare and timetable information
- Onward Journey Zone - containing multi-modal travel information
RCL is carrying out detailed surveys to allow Southern to implement their franchise commitment to display useful information effectively, by grouping it together in logical areas. This should be complete at all 157 stations by December 2010, whilst the approach is likely to be adopted by the rest of the British rail industry progressively in the near future.
