Operational Planning
Freight Planning
Even if companies are already using rail for their freight movements (or have decided to do so), achieving efficient and hence profitable operating solutions can be tricky. Asset utilisation is key - but can be difficult, as efficient terminal operation at both ends of the route needs to be combined with train slots in both directions. Locomotives can be hired from a range of freight operating companies with different strengths, and one may have to decide between wagon- or container-based solutions, needing to buy or lease the relevant equipment. Existing arrangements with trucking companies will need to be amended, but shorter-distance truck movements are potentially more attractive for truck drivers, so this may not be as difficult an ask as it might appear.
With our skills in timetabling, and our creativity in finding solutions to rail operating problems, we have guided a number of clients through the arrangements needed to develop profitable railfreight services. We have worked on both international and domestic rail projects for the quarrying and mining sectors, motor manufacturing, consumer goods suppliers, the paper industry and port operators.
