Nottingham - Lincoln Service Enhancement

Client: East Midlands Trains/Lincolnshire CC, Jan - Mar 2014

Nottingham

The Railway Consultancy was pleased to support Mouchel in its analysis of the potential for increased train service frequencies between Nottingham and Lincoln. Existing services run only hourly, which is relatively poor for larger passenger flows, whilst omitting stops leads to very wide gaps in the service to some of the intervening villages; a half-hourly service would enable both fast and slow services to operate, benefitting all users. Working for East Midlands Trains and Lincolnshire CC, tasks involved estimating the impact of new housing developments on current outputs from the LENNON rail industry revenue model, and in finding appropriate train paths along the line, including across the infamous flat junction with the East Coast Main Line at Newark. Development of the business case enabled the derivation of a Benefit:Cost ratio, which was sufficiently robust for the Department for Transport to agree to provide funding. The enhanced level of train service is expected to start with effect from the May 2015 timetable.
